"When Colonel William Moultrie received orders to take over Fort Johnson in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, he commissioned what would come to be known as the Moultrie Flag. The crescent moon had been a symbol of resistance to tyranny in the past, and in keeping with this theme Moultrie chose a white moon with the word Liberty as his banner."
