"The 1st Rhode Island Regiment has the distinction of being one of the only units in the Continental Army to serve in the entire war, and is regarded as the first African American military regiment. Their banner included the anchor (a symbol of Rhode Island since the 1630s) with an arching banner reading HOPE, and a field of thirteen stars."
